LOT AT SEA
MY DREAM
Hi, my name is Lot and I am 15 years old. In October 2024 I will make a challenging trip with School at Sea on Tall Ship Thalassa. We sail 12,000 nautical miles in 6 months, from the Netherlands via Tenerife across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean and back via Bermuda and the Azores. During this trip I do my school work independently and we go on all kinds of challenging expeditions. We also learn to sail the Thalassa as a group, from navigating and setting sail to making drinking water and baking bread.
I have been on the water since I was little. On skûtsje Eelkje II on which my parents sailed competitions when I was still a toddler and from the age of eight on the Vecht in my own optimist. Now I sail every week on IJburg in the RS Feva. And in the summer on the Frisian lakes and with my family along the Adriatic coast in Croatia.
When I heard about School at Sea I was immediately stoked: learning to sail at sea, discovering new countries, experiencing adventures and not missing anything from school... this seems great to me, that is what I'm going for!
To make this dream come true, I need to raise a significant amount of money: 27,300 euros. I will make this happen with part-time jobs, fundraising, sponsoring and all kinds of other fun activities. Would you like to help me by sponsoring nautical miles? I am very grateful in advance!

SCHOOL AT SEA
School at Sea is a talent development program in which we sail for 6 months with 35 fellow students on barkentine Thalassa to the Caribbean and back. During the trip we will stop at several places for excursions, expeditions and exchanges with local schools. The Thalassa is one of the most beautiful and fastest Tall Ships of the Dutch fleet. In the beginning of our journey the ship will mainly be sailed by the crew but as the journey progresses, we will learn to sail the ship completely by ourself. The cook also leaves after two months and all students apply for great positions in the crew.
So we learn to sail the ship ourselves and in the meantime I'll do my own schoolwork, learn and research also during expeditions. At School at Sea you are continuously developing. You sail, cook, plan your school work, do your tests on deck, plan expeditions, evaluate, take leadership and work together. It's really learning by doing. Gaining new insights about the world and myself.
Climate change is an important theme at School at Sea. The route is based on the old sailing routes, so that we can make maximum use of the trade winds and have to motor as little as possible. We also discover the value of water, during the crossing we have to make drinking water ourselves, with a water maker. And then you quickly learn to be economical with water and never use water unnecessarily. We also do a number of beach clean-ups and assist in two projects with mapping and research into micro-pollution in the ocean.
ROUTE

HARLINGEN
We leave the Netherlands in mid-October and sail to the southwest. In the fall
sailing in the Channel is always a challenge. Depending on the weather, the captain may decide to stop in France, England or Spain for better weather conditions.
TENERIFE
The first real destination is Tenerife. One of the Canary Islands. Here we do an exchange program with a local school and we climb Mount Teide, the volcano that created the island.
DOMINICA
Then we make the first Atlantic crossing to Dominica. There we go on an expedition into the jungle to the boiling lake and we spend a few days with the local community.
CURAÇAO
After some island hopping between various windward Islands we reach the ABC Islands and visit Curaçao.
PANAMA
Next we go even further west. To Guna Yala, also known as San Blas, an autonomous region in eastern Panama. Here we will find paradise: white beaches, blue water, coral reefs and palm trees. A little further west in Panama we will be put ashore to explore the country ourself with a group of fellow students. And we are going on our own journey for the first time!
CUBA
After Panama we sail a northerly course for the first time in months and the journey home begins. We will go ashore in Cuba to explore this unique island state on our own with a group of fellow students during our second trip.
BERMUDA
Then we continue to Bermuda. You will not easily see two countries that are so different from each other. The contrasts with Cuba are enormous.
AZORES
After Bermuda we cross the Atlantic Ocean again and go to the Azores. At Faial we prepare for the last stretch of sailing to the Netherlands. Where we land again in mid-April.
